Mrs Bantry was dreaming.
One day, Mrs Bantry and her husband wake up and find the body of a young girl in their library. They don’t know her, but of course, it doesn’t stop the people from whispering about an affair.
The murder has to be solved befor Colonel Bantry becomes a pariah. Which is why Mrs Bantry calls her old friend Miss Marple for help.
There’s a reason why Agatha Christie is called the Queen of Crime. Her books are very enjoyable. I love mysteries where I can be part of the action, trying to solve them for myself. And I absolutely love it when I’m completely wrong.
And this is where Agatha Christie excells: Making me suspicious of absolutely everyone. I can usually guess the murderer, but not with Christie books. There’s always an amazing twist and they are amazing at playing with expectation.
So it seemed, didn’t it”, said Miss Marple, “as though anyone might have done it?”
Another thing I enjoy about these books, and The Body in the Library is no exception, are the characters. Even the most umimportant side characters come to live and get a personality with just a few sentences.
In this book, we got a rich old man who decided to adopt the dead girl. We’ve got a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law that are in financial trouble and could lose everything to the girl. There’s a blumbling young man who was the last to see her and a man who works in film who’s also connected. And of course, the question of what the body was doing in the Bantry’s library in the first place.
It was a cheap, tawdry, flamboyant figure – most incongruous in the solid old.fashioned comfort of Colonel Bantry’s library.
To be honest, Miss Marple is not my favourite character. She’s to upright for that and she doesn’t appear much in this book. But I loved the Bantrys. They’re the kind of people you’d want for your adopted grandparents.
“Bottled, was he?” said Colonel Bantrey, with an Englishman’s sympathy for alcoholoc excess. “Oh well, can’t judge a fellow by what he does when he’s drunk.
A great mystery with a good twist, interesting characters and a great atmosphere.
